Wedding Theme: An Eye-opening Guide to Choosing Event Colors

By: Kat Trinidad

Whether you are an artist or a fashion diva, choosing the right event colors and wedding theme ideas can be overwhelming. It’s the foundation that ties your entire wedding theme together and it’s the fusion of your personal style as a couple. As soon as you choose the right colors, everything else will fall into place (well, decorations wise). It may sound easy with the basics: a base color and flattering accents to go along with it. Making sure they don’t clash with your venue colors and that they’re universal for everyone. You can also be like most brides and choose your favorite shades for the overall wedding aesthetic. But, there are other things you should think about that most people don’t talk about as often.

You may have heard too much from your entourage and your families. With their whiny feuds about your decisions or even your wedding planner who might be picky over the little things. Deep down, they want to help you but just because everyone has the right to their opinions and experiences. Well, that does not give them the right to walk over your decisions. Wishing for an easier event planning experience? We’ve got you, so keep reading for the underrated advice that you need to hear right now to feel confident, classy and also choose some colors.

Stimulate your concept through visual imagery.

In simple context just daydream, stick a VR (Virtual Reality) in your head if you have to! You are dreaming of that perfect wedding and you have to see what colors flatter your visual theme. Your eyes are the window to your soul that is connected to your mind and what is your mind picturing? Save the honeymoon thoughts for later. Imagine that you’re getting married and your wedding decor is plain white. Think about where you expect to see colors like your bouquet or your entourage’s clothes. Don’t think too hard about specific colors but its shade range: light, jewel tones, neutrals the list goes on and there are no limits to creativity. When we daydream, we often think about the kind of future you want: like meeting our life goals. In times of trials, this acts as a run-through to find a possible solution to the root problem. So take it to your advantage and visualize your wedding and the aura it gives as you enter your own wedding. It’s a little bit more challenging as you get older and you’ve already met most of your life goals. So, stimulate your creative visual by incorporating more creative hobbies like reading, writing, and listening to music.

Tell your love story through colors instead of words.

You’re scrolling down through your Pinterest feed and you see beautiful shades of rose and terracotta that go well with your wedding theme but you’re not so hyped about it. This disaster is no different than marrying the wrong person and if I were you – don’t go for it. Color is such a huge factor in celebrations so why not dive into color psychology? Not that you need an art degree for this but you do need to understand what vibes you are getting when you see certain colors. Notice that Chinese weddings are usually red and gold, which connotes fortune, prosperity, and happiness (hence the red envelopes). Your choices don’t need to follow traditional styles but instead of going with your favorite colors, why not base a color scheme around your love life and instead of describing your relationship in three words try three colors. Interpret it your way (stimulate your imagination) because when thoughts and meaning are considered in your choice of colors, then you are less likely to be that typical couple who went with what looks great but how they represent you two and the uniqueness of your relationship.

Internet research is never going to be enough.

Modern life means more technology in the world. And that’s great but too much of everything can be bad for you and the internet is no different. Searching for wedding theme ideas from the internet can damage your quality of life. It can affect both your eyes and posture. You don’t always need the internet to know what looks best. Oftentimes you just need inspiration from everyday life or mother nature. For example, picture a bed of autumn leaves, it has orange, mustard yellows, and tans. They go well together because they look gorgeous in real life. Not only are they seasonal but they are warm colors, which are wonderful for rustic and bohemian weddings. For your next self-care retreat activity, take pictures of items or landscapes that you visually love. Swatch specific colors through color pickers from paint (photoshop if you’re feeling fancy). Artistic media like coloring pencils and paints to get interesting color combinations are also great. This activity will stimulate your creative senses and help you understand color theory in a kinetic and more practical way.

People will unintentionally micromanage your decisions.

The social influences from the media and peer pressure from your parents and your entourage are expected. The combination of two can be so overwhelming that you slowly lose your authentic style. And you can’t tell if they are your ideas or the ones you’ve been ‘talked into’. We get that you want to make everyone around you happy and do the things that are expected of you. But then you’re the one who’s not happy (after all it is your wedding). When you have a strong vision and you’re stubborn enough to not settle for less. Nobody can tell you what colors look best. Not even us, but let’s be honest you’re here to find out how you can pick some colors for your wedding. There’s nothing wrong with seeking tips and advice, it will direct you to where you want to be but you have the final say in what you want.
